Essential Information

Entering Austria requires a Schengen visa for travelers from outside Schengen areas to enter the country.

Time Zone
Austria is in GMT+2 time zone.

The language spoken in Austria is German but normally people working in the tourism sector speak English.

Currency and Payment

Euro (EUR or €) is the common currency used in Austria along with its own currency. Visa and MasterCard cards are widely accepted in malls and shopping centers, but for local restaurants, it is always better to prepare cash.

Here are some do’s and don’ts in Austria:

  • Greetings – Greetings are traditionally formal in Western Europe with a firm handshake, a smile and even a slight bow in certain old-fashioned circles.
  • Kissing – Familiar colleagues may kiss each other 3 times on the cheek. However, men rarely kiss men, they shake hands!
  • Dining – Western Europeans follow the Continental or the traditional knife and fork custom when dining. Even sandwiches are eaten with a knife and fork in most West European set-ups. Wait for the host to offer the first toast. Serve yourself small portions to avoid wastage. Place your knife and fork diagonally parallel to each other on your plate, to indicate that you have finished your meal.
  • Sitting – Men sit only after all the women are seated at the table.

Best Time to Visit

Austria is stunning in summer, as the green valleys bloom in wildflowers and the picture-perfect, clear views over the Alps are a photographer’s dream. For most tourists, summer is the best time to visit Austria.

Winter is also a wonderful time to go to Austria, starting in December with the Christmas markets and ending in late February as the ski season starts to slow down. In winter, mountain villages and snowcapped mountains are a magical sight, even if you’re not there for Austria’s world-class ski resorts. Austrian cities are equally stunning – a mix of glorious architecture and gourmet cuisine that will please everyone.

No matter when you’re visiting, Austria won’t disappoint – but some months are particularly stunning and worth a trip.

Points of Interest

Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera is one of the top opera addresses in the world, with first-class productions of the very highest caliber and a different program every day: around 50 operas and ballet works per season, danced by the Vienna State Ballet. The variety of the operatic program is unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Hofburg Palace

The Hofburg is the former principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty. Located in the center of Vienna, it was built in the 13th century and expanded several times afterwards. It also served as the imperial winter residence, as Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence.

Parliament Building

Not only the interior of the building is particularly rich in artistic detail. The generous proportions and architectural features of its exterior also attract the attention and interest of visitors. It reflects the views of Architect Theophil Hansen, who saw the parliaments of his day and age as “new monuments“ which should capture the attention of the peoples much in the same way as the temples of Antiquity and the cathedrals of the Middle Ages had done in the past.

Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace itself is the undisputed main attraction. It’s one of the most impressive and beautiful palace buildings from the baroque era in Europe. The palace is full of superlatives and it is rightfully one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Sisi had a total of 1441 rooms at Schönbrunn Palace at their disposal. Visitors now have the opportunity to see 45 of these opulent rooms and immerse themselves directly in the imperial age.

The Sound of Music Tour

Explore original shooting locations on the Sound of Music Tour in all kinds of different ways: by bus, on foot, by bicycle or even a rickshaw. Whatever you choose, it’s bound to be a one-of-a-kind experience.

The life of the von Trapp family is intertwined with that of Salzburg itself. Every year, some 300,000 people visit important landmarks in the life of the von Trapp family and the story told by the movie. The fascinating life of former novice Maria von Trapp and her singing family became a worldwide success when the film was released in 1965, with Julie Andrews starring as Maria. The songs from “The Sound of Music” is famous around the globe.

Bergisel Ski Jump

The Bergisel Ski Jump, whose stadium has a capacity of 26,000, is a ski jumping hill located in Bergisel in Innsbruck, Austria. It is one of the more important venues in the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup, annually hosting the third competition of the prestigious Four Hills Tournament.

Tirol Panorama

The Tirol Panorama with the Museum of the Imperial Infantry or Tirol Panorama is a museum in Innsbruck in the Austrian state of Tyrol, which is mainly important because it houses the Innsbruck Giant Panorama Painting.

Ambras Castle

Long before Innsbruck became a city, references to an Amras or Omras appeared in documents dating from the 10th century. This early fortification in what was then the southwest corner of Bavaria was the seat of power of the Counts of Andechs, who became Margraves of Istria and later Dukes of the short-lived Imperial State of Merania from 1180 to 1248. This original fortification was destroyed in 1133 and no traces of it remain, although some of the material from the original structure was later used in the modern building.

Innsbruck City Tour

Innsbruck, capital of Austria’s western state of Tyrol, is a city in the Alps that’s long been a destination for winter sports. Innsbruck is also known for its Imperial and modern architecture. The Nordkette funicular, with futuristic stations designed by architect Zaha Hadid, climbs up to 2,256m from the city center for skiing in winter and hiking or mountaineering in warmer months.

Austria Train Experience

Austria is an interesting mountainous country wedged between the Western European countries of Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. It also borders on the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia.

Mountainous territories offer lots of technical challenge to railroad designers, as well as a high degree of danger to those who work on rail routes. Of course, it is this difficult landscape which produces the most awe-inspiring views from the window of a train car.

The three scenic rail routes described in here were first built in the mid-1800s, a pioneering phase of railroad construction, and represent some of the greatest feats of civil engineering of their time.
